How Do I Make a Blackboard Course Accessible?

Check Blackboard course pages, files, media and assessments in the institution’s actual deployment. Platform settings and alternative formats do not establish complete course access.

A Blackboard course contains more than its platform interface. Review the pages, uploaded files, media, assessments and external tools students must use. Confirm the deployed release and any separate accessibility services.

Improve authored content

Use meaningful headings and links, appropriate image alternatives and text labels alongside color. Check table relationships and keyboard operation. Follow Blackboard's current authoring documentation for the actual course experience; Original, Ultra and separately licensed services can differ.

Inspect attachments and media

Prefer structured editable sources where practical. Validate the saved PDFs, slides and spreadsheets students receive. Review captions against speech and meaningful sounds, and provide necessary visual descriptions. An alternative-format download may serve a useful purpose, but it is a separate output to evaluate.

Test consequential tasks

Use student roles to open resources, complete assessments and operate external tools. Include keyboard and relevant assistive-technology checks. Give students a usable way to report barriers and coordinate urgent access with disability services.

Aelira Core is beta software. Supported workflows can apply eligible partial fixes and record outcomes, but some inputs need manual work or cannot produce a downloadable remediated file. Review the actual saved output, unresolved findings and content preservation before publication. Automated scores describe implemented checks rather than accessibility conformance. Inspect the public source and release documentation and evaluate a representative authorized sample before planning a rollout.

Aelira's Blackboard connector is experimental. Connection, discovery, retrieval, processing and permitted writeback are separate capabilities. Verify them in an authorized test course before planning a rollout; do not assume a connection automatically monitors or repairs every course item.
