How Do I Add Bookmarks to a PDF?
Create descriptive PDF bookmarks using a supported editor or source export, then test destinations and hierarchy. Bookmarks complement tags and reading-order checks.
PDF bookmarks provide navigation to locations in a document. They are useful for longer material, but they do not replace semantic tags, an accurate reading sequence or accessible content.
Plan the outline
Choose meaningful sections and descriptive bookmark labels. Reflect the document's hierarchy without creating an overwhelming list. A bookmark should lead to the intended heading or starting location, not an unrelated page or a stale position left by editing.
Create them in a supported workflow
In Acrobat, use the bookmark tools documented for the installed release. Create destinations at the relevant locations and organize the outline. Where the editor supports generating bookmarks from existing structure, inspect the generated names and destinations.
In Word, use semantic headings and the PDF export option that creates bookmarks from headings where available. Microsoft documents the information included in supported Word PDF exports. Do not assume Google Docs or every conversion service produces the same bookmark tree; examine the delivered file.
Verify independently
Open the saved PDF in the intended reader. Activate each bookmark, test nesting and keyboard navigation, and check behavior after rearranging pages. Also test heading navigation through the tags where relevant. A missing bookmark does not mean every screen-reader user must read every page sequentially.
Keep the original and inspect the actual saved output. Combine relevant automated checks with manual review of meaning, reading order, navigation and content preservation. Test important student tasks with the intended reader and assistive technologies. A clean checker report alone does not establish conformance.
Aelira Core is beta software. Supported workflows can apply eligible partial fixes and record outcomes, but some inputs need manual work or cannot produce a downloadable remediated file. Review the actual saved output, unresolved findings and content preservation before publication. Automated scores describe implemented checks rather than accessibility conformance. Inspect the public source and release documentation and evaluate a representative authorized sample before planning a rollout.
