How Do I Fix Table Headers in a PDF?

Identify actual table headers, encode their relationships with data cells, and test the saved PDF. Complex tables may need source changes or specialist remediation.

Accessible PDF tables need structural relationships matching the data. A row that looks bold is not sufficient evidence of a header, and adding a Table tag does not establish the associations a reader needs.

Understand the table first

Identify column and row headers, units, captions and any merged or multi-level relationships. Decide whether the layout is actually a data table. Repeated page headers and nested structures can complicate the representation.

Repair source or PDF structure

When possible, simplify and correct the editable source, then inspect the export. In a PDF editor, use the installed version's supported table tools. Check Table, TR, TH and TD roles and the applicable scope or explicit header associations. The correct method depends on the structure and target standard.

Do not convert all first-row cells to headers without checking their meaning. Complex tables may need explicit associations, source redesign or specialist remediation; there is no universal automatic inference rule.

Verify with the intended task

Inspect the saved tag structure and relevant validator findings. Test movement between data cells using the reader and assistive technologies the institution supports. Confirm that the announced relationships and values match the visible source.

Keep the original and inspect the actual saved output. Combine relevant automated checks with manual review of meaning, reading order, navigation and content preservation. Test important student tasks with the intended reader and assistive technologies. A clean checker report alone does not establish conformance.

Aelira Core is beta software. Supported workflows can apply eligible partial fixes and record outcomes, but some inputs need manual work or cannot produce a downloadable remediated file. Review the actual saved output, unresolved findings and content preservation before publication. Automated scores describe implemented checks rather than accessibility conformance. Inspect the public source and release documentation and evaluate a representative authorized sample before planning a rollout.
