Why we're writing this: You deserve an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.
YuJa and Ally both auto-remediate common issues and convert math to MathML. Aelira's focus is depth: deep multi-type remediation (tag trees, reading order, tables), native LaTeX/STEM source to accessible MathML, and a self-hosted on-prem AI option so documents never leave your servers.
However, we're a newer vendor (not as established as YuJa/Ally). Our Canvas LTI 1.3 integration is live and production-verified; Brightspace is in beta, and Blackboard and Moodle are still experimental.
Bottom line: Choose Aelira if you need bulk remediation and STEM support. Choose YuJa/Ally if your workflow lives in an LMS we don't yet cover in production.
Our biggest differentiator: We don't just tell you "this image is missing alt text." We generate contextual alt text that you can approve or edit. Same for contrast fixes, heading structure, ARIA labels, etc.

Current state: Canvas LTI 1.3 is live and production-verified, so Canvas courses can be scanned and fixed in-context. On other LMSs you upload files to Aelira (via web or CLI), process them, then re-upload.
In progress: D2L Brightspace is in beta; Blackboard and Moodle integrations are experimental.
Workaround: Use bulk CLI processing to scan entire directories at once, then batch re-upload.
Reality: YuJa and Ally have been around since 2016 and are used by hundreds of universities. Aelira launched in 2025, so we're the new kid on the block.
What this means: You won't find as many case studies or peer references (yet). A bounded pilot can provide evidence against an agreed corpus before a production commitment.
Current state: Our architecture is FERPA-aligned (self-hosted AI + encrypted storage), but SOC 2 Type II certification is still on our roadmap.
If SOC 2 is a hard requirement, YuJa and Ally both publicly state SOC 2 compliance (verify current status with each vendor). We're catching up.
Reality: Our AI generates high-accuracy fixes, but human review is recommended before you apply them. This takes a fraction of the time vs. manual work, but it's not zero-touch.
Why: AI can misinterpret image context or suggest suboptimal alt text. Human review ensures quality.
